Snapshotting services have been offered by services like blockchain.info and Blockcypher in the Bitcoin space for a long time now. No one is seriously promoting these services as a scaling solution because they are not trust-less.

If you are pruning/deleting transactions, then you are removing total POW and the chain becomes less secure. There is no free lunch.

If the Tangle is structured in such a way that you don’t need the full chain ( you are using snapshots), then it just means you sacrificed security in favor of having to process less data.
